About

Producer David Sabel created National Theatre Live, the groundbreaking programme of live cinema broadcasts, and ran the National Theatre’s first Broadcast and Digital department from 2008-2015. In that time, he produced 48 NT Live productions; four television documentaries (two BAFTA nominations and a Royal Television Society award); the National Theatre’s fiftieth anniversary gala broadcast live on BBC2; and was Executive Producer on the feature film London Road with Olivia Colman, directed by Rufus Norris. From there, he joined Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr at London Theatre Company to launch the Bridge Theatre as their first Director of Creative Development. In 2019, he produced a global cinema event to celebrate the publication of Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments with Fane Productions.

In 2020, he founded sabel productions to produce original content and provide consultancy on the integration of film and digital work with live events and experiences. It has played an instrumental role in the National Theatre’s distribution strategy in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, expanding its content licensing and informing the conception and launch of the National Theatre at Home streaming platform. Its first production is a new film of Romeo & Juliet for television, with more film, theatre and documentary projects in development.

David trained as an actor at Northwestern University and Ecole Jacques Lecoq. After stints as a puppet maker and a chef at Rose Bakery in Paris, he completed an MBA at Cambridge University.
